Challenges of studying in the UK

Many universities require students (whatever be their educational background or what they are pursuing) to study subjects that they may  have  never  studied before. So  even  if  someone   is  pursuing say, psychology they may be required to take a math class or philosophy class, someone pursuing engineering will face a similar situation.

Another challenge that students face is cooking. Many colleges don’t offer accommodation hence students have to cook food on their own. This may be time consuming and troublesome for children who do not know how to cook.

Since the education system in UK is quite different from the Indian one, students may find it a little hard adjusting to it at first. Since   the courses focus more on  the   practicality  of  the  subject  than  the  theory.  Moreover,  students are  expected to write  academic  papers, research papers and long essays regularly.

Last but not the least you may be a victim of homesickness.

Fee and living expenses

The fee and living expenses vary according to the college you are attending, the city you're living in and the course you are pursuing. Students planning to pursue medical courses should be prepared to spend at least twice the amount of money that the other children are spending, averaging to about 24 pounds. If a student applies to colleges  in London his accommodation cost will increase automatically by 2-3 pounds. The cost of living averages to around 6 pounds a year.

How to apply

When applying to the UK all students whether international or home students have to go through a common application portal – UCAS (Universities and Colleges Service). They essentially operate and manage the application processes for universities situated in the UK. The process has been summarised in the following points –

  1. Submit your personal details such as your address, phone number, parent’s details, nationality, passport details and your email id. Note: you need to verify your email id.

  2. Now submit the details surrounding your educational background such as class 10th transcripts and 12th transcripts. You will enter all the qualifications that you have achieved over the past years.

  3. Mention your school and your qualifications. The qualifications will already be mentioned in the form, you have to select them and fill out the other required details.

  4. You are also required to attach your predicted or your present transcripts

  5. You are then to send a letter of recommendation from your school teacher (mention her name and her email id) she will then receive a link to fill out the LOR.

  6. A Statement of Purpose which highlights your talents and qualities and why you will be an integral part of the university and the university will be a perfect fit for the university.

  7. Remember, you can only apply to a maximum of 5 colleges and 5 courses. Whether you choose to apply to 5 different colleges with 5 different courses or 1 college with 5 different courses or 5 different colleges with the same course.

  8. You will also be required to give an English test. An IELTS exam is preferred over a TOEFL exam. No SAT required.

  9. You are now required to pay for your application.

Personal Experience

Paranjoy Roy was a student of  Imperial  college  of  London;  he described  his  stay  in London  as  life  changing.  According to him, the experience was outstanding. He states that his college ensured that he studied and their education system was a  lot different  from  the Indian one. He further states that the country was beautiful and he was able to pursue his interests in sports going so far as representing his college as the team captain in matches. If given the opportunity to study anywhere, he would most definitely study in London again.
